Lesson 5. - String Crossings: Solo Music

The goal of this lesson is to explore the string crossings in the actual period pieces, of which some may already be familiar to bassists as they probably encountered them during their studies and auditions. Here the excerpts from that literature will be presented with the full fingerings and a commentary.

The lessons starts with the famous Dittersdorf 2nd Concerto opening section, and follows with the sometime omitted "Alberti" section of the same piece. Both of these examples are ideal to explore some of the most inventive writing for the Viennese bass within the range of octave harmonic.

We will see here that in some instances the obvious and logical fingerings may not always be the most convenient ones, as what in the theory may look very logical and apparent may not prove so ideal for the comfort of performance.
